Kaveh Mozzafari Issues Open Letter to the Head of Judiciary

August 17, 2009

Change for Equality: Over a month has passed since the arrest of Kaveh Mozzafari, a member of the One Million Signatures Campaign who was arrested on July 9. Despite the fact that the Head of the Judiciary Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi had emphasized that the situation of those recently arrested would be addressed and resolved quickly, the case of Kaveh Mozzafari as well as others arrested in the recent unrest remains unclear. Kaveh Mozzafari issued an open letter last week on August 10, 2009 addressed to the Head of the Judiciary objecting to his situation, his continued detention and the violation of his civil rights. In the letter Kaveh explains that while his temporary arrest order was signed by Judge HeydariFar, he has never been provided with an explanation as to the reason for his arrest. Further, while all others arrested recently, he has been charged with acting against national security, disrupting public order, and destruction of public property, but no explanations as to the reason for these charges have been provided. Additionally, in this letter Kaveh Mozafari explains that while being interrogated with a blind fold, the questions interrogators asked had nothing to do with the charges against them, instead they focused on private issues and on his beliefs, and objects to the psychological pressures he has faced in prison.

Also in the letter, this member of the Campaign, while stressing that his interrogations are over, and given the order of the head of the judiciary to address pending cases, urges the Head of the Judiciary to take steps to ensure the rights of those in detention. He has further urged the Head of the Judiciary to take steps to address his case as well as the cases of others in prison in a fair and impartial manner and end the temporary arrest order against him.

It should be noted that this letter was issued in the last days of the Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi’s term as Head of the Judiciary.

Kaveh Mozaffari Arrested Again During July 9 Unrest

July 10, 2009

Change for Equality: Kaveh Mozaffari was arrested by security officials near his home. Kaveh was accompanying his mother in law, Ms. Bayat, whose health was in bad condition to the Mostafa Khomeini Hospital located in Italia street.

Ms. Bayat stated that all routes were closed because of the protests held to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the student uprising of 18 Tir (July 9th, 1999) and they were not able to reach the hospital and had to return home. On their way back home plain-clothes forces arrested Kaveh. Ms. Bayat was very ill and asked the officers to release Kaveh, but they did not pay attention to her requests. They reportedly said "this person is Kaveh Mozaffari and has been identified" and then took him to one of the vans stationed to transport arrested protester. According to Ms. Bayat they threatened to arrest her as well.

Kaveh Mozaffari, a women’s rights activist and a member of the One Million Signatures Campaign, who was arrested along with tens of others during the May 1, 2009 gathering on the occasion of International Workers Day, had recently been released from Evin prison on June 24th, after spending 54 days in detention. He was released on a bail order in the amount of 50 million Tomans (roughly $50,000).
