Maryam Bahreman, Campaign and Women’s Rights Activist In Shiraz Arrested

Change for Equality - Maryam Bahreman, a women’s rights and Campaign activist based in the city of Shiraz was arrested on May, 14, 2011. At 7:00 AM on that day, several of the security guards arrived at Maryam’s home and after inspection of her home for 3 hours, they confiscated personal items, including her cellphone, books, and notebooks. The security agents also presented an arrest warrant and proceeded to arrest this women’s rights activist, on the charges of "acting against national security". The news of the arrest has been confirmed by Maryam’s family and her friends.

Maryam Bahreman is a social activist and the member of “One million signature” in Shiraz. She has been active in promoting women’s rights for several years. Maryam also maintains two weblogs titled “A Scrap of Paper" and "A Scrap of Paper in Exile."

Maryam was one of the speakers of fifty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which was held in NY in February 2011. She presented a report about Information and Communications Technologies in Iran from a gender perspective.
