Condolences to Mahbobeh Karami, Imprisoned Women’s Rights Activist, on the Passing of her Father

Saturday 31 December 2011

Change for Equality: It is with great sadness that we offer our deepest condolences to our friend and colleague, Mahbobeh Karami on the passing of her father.

Mahbobeh’s father passed away on the 16th of December after suffering from serious respiratory problems. He had been hospitalized in the critical care unit prior to his passing and Mahbobeh was able to have a very short visit with him, under guard supervision on the 14th of December.

Mahbobeh Karami, who began serving her three year prison term in May 2011, was not however allowed to be present at her father’s funeral. Her brother Mohsen had been working to gain furlough for her so that she could spend time with her father in his last days and use the opportunity to address her own worsening health conditions. His request was however denied by Medical Commission of the Organization of prisons, despite the fact that Mahbobeh is suffering from severe depression as well as other ailments. On December 23, Mahbobeh was allowed a few hours furlough to visit her father’s grave. She appeared at the cemetery under heavy prison security. Her family managed to be present at the time of her visit and also visited with her. This visit raised her spirits a bit.

Mahbobeh lost her mother in April of 2009 under similar conditions. She had been on temporary arrest and was only released a few hours prior to her mother’s death.

Mahbobeh was sentenced to serve 3 years in prison, by Judge Movahed, on charges related to her human rights activities, including spreading of propaganda against the state and gathering and collusion with the intent of carrying out crimes against the security of the state. Mahboubeh suffers from severe depression and anemia, and her health has deteriorated considerably after the passing of her father, making it difficult for her to serve the remainder of her prison term.

We offer our deepest condolences to our friend and colleague Mahbobeh Karami on the passing of her father and decry the injustice of denying her the opportunity to spend the last few days of her father’s life at his side. While wishing Mahbobeh and her family strength during this time of loss, we hope that she will be released soon and will be allowed sufficient time in furlough to regain her own health. We remind Mahbobeh, her family and ourselves, that it is always darkest before the dawn and that these dark days too shall pass.
